| The Federation long ago realized how difficult it would
become to maintain their pressence in all points of Federation controlled space. Starfleet
was tasked with supplying all members of the United Federation of Planets with protection
in the event of hostile activity on the part of an aggressive species. After much debate,
it was decided that the clear choice for the Federation would be to establish a network of
starbases throughout Federation space. These starbases would serve as tactical
"strongholds", safe havens for ships that had come under fire and required
repair. They also serve to extend Federation policy into the far reaches of Federation
space and beyond. With over five hundred seperate starbases and ports, starbases have started to take on far more important roles in Starfleet policy than was originally envisioned. Starbases exist as strategic posts, scientific stations, service and repair ports, starship construction complexes, and supply posts. A vast majority of these starbases are located in sparse sections of Federation space, however, some are located planetside on planets of particular importance to the Federation. For example, the starbase located on Daniels 07 is in a prime tactical position, starbase 171 serves as a major crew rotation outpost, and starbase 515 serves as a major medical facility for Starfleet. |
