| The Defiant Class was initially intended for duty as
light weight scout and escort vessel. It was not until Starfleet Command ordered
Starfleet's Advanced Starship Design Bureau (ASDB) to redirect its energies that the
Defiant became what it is today. Equipping her with an impressive array of defensive and
offensive weapons, this class of vessel proved its worth in the Federation defense of
Sector 001 during the second Borg invasion. With construction based at Antares Fleet Yards, the Defiant class was rushed into production to counter the threat posed by the Borg. The Defiant class remains in many of its early design testing stages, with only a few starships completely constructed. Intended as a "Swarm" vessel, the Defiant class was to be the first class of "The New Fleet". Unfortunately, Starfleet has abandoned the principal of "swarm" tactics with the reduction in the state of alert concerning the Borg. With the introduction of the Dominion threat, Starfleet redirected the Defiant project, declaring it officially as an escort, and tasking the program with countering the potential threat posed by the Jem'Hadar. With minimal crew accomodations, a small sickbay, and no provisions for families, the Defiant class is one of the few starships to be assigned a "home port". |
