Only recently approved by Starfleet's Advanced Starship Design Bereau (ASDB), the Intrepid class remains in some of its late design and testing phases. Their have been only four Intrepid class starships built by Starfleet, with several more in their various testing and construction stages.

The Intrepid class starships have become some of the most technologically advanced ships in all of the fleet, owing to some of their unique properties. One of the most prominent of these "cutting edge" designs is the incorporation of bio-neural gel packs to replace much of the standard isolinear chip circuitry found on previous Federation vessels. Among the other unique features of the Intrepid class ships is their ability to conduct takeoff and landing operations on planetoid bodies.

Superbly equipped for exploration and research, these ships have an equally impressive array of defensive and offensive weapons. When designing the Intrepid, Starfleet ASDB sought to create a starship that had learned many of the hard lessons taught at Wolf 359.
