| These ships were built around the concept of Detachable
Equipment Modules (DEMs) which can be attached and detached, allowing the ships to be
configured for multiple mission profiles, including space superiority, Marine assault,
medical or scientific research, and repair ops. While
conducting a rather standard study of Starfleet effectiveness, it was discovered that
while in general, the fleet's performance was very good, one concern that was noted was
the incredible proliferation of the numbers of classes of Starfleet vessels. This large
number of classes required repair facilities to maintain parts and experienced technicians
for medical ships, repair tenders, research vessels, etc. One recommendation of the study
was that a reconfigurable starship be designed.
A Utopia Planitia design team, headed by Dr. Tokash Jael
and Dr. Jacques de Torres had recently developed the concept of a universal hardpoint
adapter, which allowed Federation starships to more easily dock at many types of
starbases. The two engineers decided to develop an equipment module that could be attached
to a Federation starship using these hardpoints.
In the course of their efforts, it became obvious that no
existing Federation starship would be able to mount the many types of modules that were
possible, so on Stardate 25624.8, the decision to develop three new classes of starships
was made.
The Rigel class Light Cruiser, mounting one DEM, was
designed as a science and research vessel. The Nebula class Heavy Cruiser, also mounting
one DEM, is a space superiority and exploration vessel. The New Orleans class Frigate,
mounting three DEMs, was capable of handling multiple mission profiles in the dangerous
areas that Rigel class vessels could not go.
New Orleans class Frigates are produced at the Sol III
and Sol IV shipyards, under the control of Utopia Planetia. The New Orleans class Frigate
represents a proven design, and one that has provided great service to the Federation. In
addition, the versatility of the design has served the ship well, and allowed New Orleans
class ships to be upgraded as Federation technology advances. |
